Auroville was a vision of The Mother, a French lady whose real name was Mirra Alfassa from Sri Aurobindo Ashram at Pondicherry (Puducherry). Her envision has laid the foundation of Auroville city. She founded the city of Auroville based on the philosophy in which a town where unity will be celebrated and all will have a spiritual vocation.
She took Aurobindo’s teachings and popularized them for the proselyte. Approximately 2200 people from 43 different countries reside in this city. The city is built within a radius of 3km where multinational, multilingual and multicultural population is living within its limits.
It is built using the local resources. Several schools, research institute and other establishments are run here. The research institute conducts research on energy, agriculture and many other areas. At the center is the Matrimandir, the Spiritual center of Auroville, situated in a large open area called ‘Peace’, from where the future city will radiate outwards. This place is satiated with quiet and charged atmosphere.
Emerges as a large golden sphere, The Matrimandir seems to be rising out of the earth, personify the birth of a new consciousness seeking to conspicuous.
The lovely green Matrimandir Gardens with great variety of flowers, shrubs and trees draws everyone’s attention. A person who comes here can’t skip noticing the important and powerful feature at the heart of the city which was seen by the Mother as the “symbol of the Divine’s answer to man’s aspiration for perfection” and as “the central cohesive force” for the growth of Auroville.
There are twelve gardens surrounding the structure designed as they converge around the structure in the huge petal crown from which the Matrimandir arises. Each garden is designed specifically according to the mother’s indication. Each garden is decored with specific flowers and colors which has their own meaning.
The gardens have been named purposefully as Consciousness, Bliss, Light, Power, Wealth, Utility, Progress, Youth, Harmony and Perfection. The main intention of designing these gardens is to make people feel the real meaning of life and consciousness which they look for in their whole life. Each garden has some hidden meaning which it reflects through its beauty and quality. There are two additional gardens i.e. garden of unity and garden of love.
How to get there:
Auroville is 150 kms away from Chennai (Madras) and about 10 kms from Pondicherry town.
Several bus and local transport facilities are available from Chennai for Auroville.
