The Deccan Odyssey is a special luxurious train in India. It was modeled on the Palace on Wheels to boost tourism on the Konkan route of the Indian Railways.
The route starts from Mumbai and then travels to Mumbai-Sindhudurg-Goa-Vasco-Kolhapur-Aurangabad (Ellora)-Jalgaon(Ajanta)-Nashikand then finally back to Mumbai.
Deccan Odyssey takes the travelers into a tumultuous tour to Maharashtra and then presents to them the real spirit of the land in the most delicate manner.
In 2004, the Maharashtra government stopped its run of the Deccan Odyssey, citing because of poor response, but restarted again it after the next monsoon season. The duration of the tour is about 7 nights, starting from every Wednesday to Mumbai.
The objective of running “The Deccan Odyssey” train is primarily to showcase the best of tourism chattels of Maharashtra like beauty of pristine in Konkan coast and the art of the culture, the heritage (including world heritage sites like Ajanta – Ellora) of Maharashtra as well as Maharashtra’s arts, crafts and food.
The train has basically a 21 coaches, out of which 12s are passenger cars accommodating 8 people per coach (10 passenger Cars, 4 coupes per coach – 2 Presidential Suite Cars, 2 coupes/coach), 1 Conference Car, 2 Dinning Cars, 2 Generator Cars with Luggage Store, 2 Staff, spare Car, 1 Spa Car, 1 Bar Car.
The train has on-panel it gives facilities like Television, Cable connection with central audio disc player, cell phones, Channel Music, and Foreign exchange facilities, etc. The whole capacity of the train is near about 80 passengers.
Deccan odyssey train is a embark & association of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Ltd and the Ministry of Railways that is Governmtent of India. “The Deccan Odyssey” The train has been benchmarked against the best luxury trains in the world like the Blue Train from the South Africa, The Orient Express of Europe & the Eastern and Oriental of South East Asia.
In addition to being a train that touches tourist spots, this aim to be a complete 5-star hotel on wheels with two restaurants and a bar, a sauna business centre and other such amenities on board.
The coaches fitted with special amenities were manufactured by the Factory in Chennai. 10 fully air-conditioned Deluxe Cabin saloons, each with a combination of 4 twin bed chambers and 2 fully air-conditioned Presidential Suite saloons each with 2 suites with combination of living rooms & bed rooms. Saloons are equipped with channel music, intercom, and player, attached toilets, running hot & cold water, shower, wall-to-wall carpeting services and other amenities.
