Located in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka State, Gokarna is an ancient temple town and centre for Sanskrit studies. Situated at the junction of the rivers Gangavali and Aghanashini, Gokarna is a serene temple town. The meeting point of these two rivers is in the shape of an ear, and that is the reason why the town got its name.

Having considerable mythological reverence, Gokarna is visited by part of a largely Hindu domain, pay homage to the famous Mahabaleswara temple, which is a renowned Shiva temple. The other prominent temples in Gokarna are the Maha Ganapathi Temple, the Varadaraja temple, the Bhadrakali Temple and the Venkataramana temple.

Gokarna Beach is the town’s main beach in Gokarna and pilgrims mostly gather after visiting the Mahabaleshwar Temple. The Kudle Beach is the largest of the five beaches. The most famous is Om Beach with beautiful coastline forming the shape of the Hindu symbol Om.

The constantly violent waves crashing on the rocky shores, miles of white sand greeting the avid beach-goer and the entire serene beauty is full of temptation.

How to Get to Gokarna

By Air: The nearest airport is Goa.

By Rail: The Gokarna Train station is around 8 km from the town. It is well connected by railways with the nearest stations being Kumta and Ankola, 35km and 20 km away respectively. Other stations that offer better connectivity with Gokarna include Mangalore, Margao, Hubli and Karwar.

By Road: Gokarna can be reached by road from places such as Mangalore, Banglore and Karwar. There are regular buses that ply between these cities that connect Gokarna.
