Periyar National Park often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a National Park in Kerala and Wildlife Sanctuary located in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, south India. It is a protected area distinguished as an elephant reserve and a reserve. Set high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu state, Periyar National Park sprawled over an area of 925 square.kms. It was declared as National park in 1982. An example of nature’s recompense, Periyar National Park offers great panoramic charisma, rich bio diversity and veritable visitor serenity. Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India. Zealously protected and efficiently managed reserve is a repository of endemic, endangered and rare flora and fauna and forms the major ewer of two important rivers of Kerala, the Pamba and Periyar. The main attractions of this park are the tiger and elephants. Apart from Elephants, the other animals to be seen in the Periyar sanctuary are Sambar, Mouse Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Pigs, Gaur, Dole or Indian Wild Dog. Four species of primates are found at Periyar – the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur, the rare lion-tailed macaque and Bonnet Macaque. It also happens to be the dwelling of the elusory Nilgiri Tahr, which is rarely to be seen. A vast birdlife and reptile population also survives here and is major attraction of tourists.

In the lap of the mountains, the Periyar wildlife sanctuaries environ is like a canvas of many shades. The fresh breeze of the moist deciduous forest gives one a chance to experience the peace and tranquillity and long to return for more. The other attractions of Periyar are Kumily , Kerala’s beautiful Cardamom hills, Boat Cruises . Periyar Lake in the center of Periyar sanctuary presents an excellent boating spot for tourists and a chance to spot the wild animals at the water’s edge.

The best season to visit Periyar wildlife sanctuary is from the months of October and June. The towns in its outskirt are well equipped with the excellent hotels and resorts for accommodation.
Tourists can easily get at Periyar by road; rail and air. The nearest airport is Kochi and Madurai at 200 kms and 140 kms respectively. Kottayam at distance of 114-kms is the nearest railhead from Periyar.

The nearest town from Periyar is Kumily, well served by both state and private buses from Ernakulum, Kottayam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
