Located at a height of 3636 m above sea level, Sandakphu is a tourist destinations and a true paradise for all adventure lovers. The mesmerizing vista of the Himalayan range while trekking to the highest point on this hill station is breathtaking. A long stretch of Himalayas starting from Bhutan till Mt. Everest is visible. Tourists come here to see the best view of the mountain Kanchendzonga which is known as the sleeping Buddha or the sleeping Shiva.

Flowing river Teesta through Sandakphu at quite a pace offers a great option for adventure sports especially river rafting. Sandakphu is world famous for the exceptionally found Rhododendron and Silver fir forests. Subalpine flowers, magnolias, primulas, rhododendrons, and myriad of orchid’s blossom in this peak which is its captivating feature capture the eyes of the visitors. This place is known for its sunset and sunrise.

Sandakfu or Sandakphu is the highest peak in the state of West Bengal, India. It is settled at the edge of the Singalila National Park in Darjeeling district on the West Bengal-Sikkim border. It is the highest point of the Singalila Ridge also. It is situated at the distance of 58 km from Darjeeling. Sandakphu has a small hamlet on the peak with a number of hostels.

Sandakphu can be reached by trekking. It is the last destination of many trekking routes in the Darjeeling-Sikkim region. The trekking starts from Maneybhanjang via Chitirey, Tonglu, Meghma, Tumling, KalaPokhri, Gairibas, Bekhey to Sandakphu.

It is a point from where one can easily absorb the beautiful view of four peaks – Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhoste and Makalu. Sandakphu is referred as the Trekker’s paradise as it offers excellent opportunities for trekking. The trek along the Singalila Ridge to Sandakphu and Phalut is one of the most popular ones in the Eastern Himalayas due to the grand vistas of the Kanchenjunga range and the Everest range.

This place can be visited all around the year. The temperature swings from -20°C in winter to +15°C in summer. It gets snowfall in late December to early February.

How to get here:

The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri. This is well connected to most of the major cities in India. The town of Darjeeling can be easily reached from Siliguri which is nearly 80 km away by the famous Toy Train. Maneybhanjan is a gateway to Sandakphu from where Sandakphu can be easily reached after a trek of 12 hrs. Hiring a Landrover from Maneybhanjan is also an option.
